Mantel Style for the New Year

If you’re anything like me, now that the holidays have passed and Christmas is over, you’re left wondering what the heck to do with your mantel. There’s something about taking down that garland that leaves you feeling a bit confused. All of a sudden it looks barren. Which on one hand, the simplicity I love and on the other, I know it needs something. You could always just put back what you had up but chances are that was fall-inspired and doesn’t feel right for the New Year. Clearly shopping your home is the preferred option and usually what I do but if you’re wanting some fresh mantel finds or styling ideas this post is for you. Fresh mantel style for the New Year.

Now I’m a big fan of art above our mantel but in recent years have loved having a mirror above mine. And we play musical mirrors on occasion. Many of you have a TV mounted above your fireplace which there’s nothing wrong with but does limit styling options because the layering look doesn’t make husbands happy. But you can still do a pretty tray below or something on the sides. Now days the TVs themselves can look like art.

Here’s three ideas for a pretty mantel this New Year:

LAYERED ART

I love layered art on a mantel. Probably my fav at the moment because it’s both fresh and timeless and really let’s your creativity shine. Layer a vintage oil painting (search Etsy or eBay) with a modern abstract print. Or create one yourself. All those framed sharpie doodles I’m seeing out there have me inspired. I’ve loved this mirror from the moment I saw it and paired with these prints, it’s a beautiful way to style a mantel. The mirror is a beauty with its gentle arch yet modern black metal frame and it gives you a clean slate to add art.

There are so many wonderful sites to get art from these days. The ones styled here, the black and white abstract and traditional floral, are from Artfully Walls. I love their art (usually available in many different sizes) and frame options but you can go straight to your favorite artist too for they often have prints available. I have this wicker vase and it’s a steal for how pretty and substantial it is. The wicker goes beautifully with the more modern mirror.

SOME CLASSIC SYMMETRY

This works well if you have a pair of something (vases, pots, lanterns) to use on either side of a mirror, art or TV.  Here I used these beautiful rattan lanterns by Aerin for William Sonoma Home which would make a lovely addition to a mantel. This example is all about texture. The raffia mirror and natural rattan lanterns look beautiful when paired with a long brass tray.

CLASSIC CANDLE STICKS

Candlesticks have graced a mantel for ages. Timeless and lovely, they add height, texture and are a addition to mantel decor. From antique brass ones to ceramic options, these white rattan ones add a coastal feel I can’t help but love. Now there’s a reason this mirror is so popular. It’s pretty and SO big for only $69.99 which is unheard of for such a large mirror. It’s currently above my mantel and I love it. It pairs beautifully with vintage art or a contemporary print in a modern frame.

Whether you’re displaying a favorite piece of art, a family heirloom, vintage treasures, family photos, a Target steal or clippings from your yard, the New Year brings new styling options and I hope you’re inspired to try out some mantel style for the New Year. Happy New Year friends!
