Aubrey fluttered through her 5th birthday with a butterfly party & a flock of friends. Soft colors, pretty florals and lots of dancing butterflies overhead made it a party to remember. This may go down as one of my favorites ever. Beautifully captured, even on a gloomy day, by Ruth Eileen Photography.
By this point you all probably know how much I love the creative moments parties afford me. As with all the parties I plan, my kiddos pick the theme and Aubrey was quite adamant about butterflies. And what a fun theme! It gave me some sweet directions to go in. We did a lot ourselves, like making the backdrops out of wood and paint samples (except for the wood cut out butterfly you can find here). My launching point and inspiration for this party was the fabric for the dessert table, an Etsy find. That dictated the color of the balloons I purchased (soft buttercream, muted pinks and lavenders), the kid’s table paper products and the flowers I used for the arrangements. Have that good piece of inspiration and the whole party comes together.
One of my favorites to date. It had the right balance of detail, whimsy and loveliness. The two different butterfly lollipops were a hit with the tiny butterflies and the cake from Lizzie’s Bakery couldn’t be sweeter. Bethany from Flour’d by Bethany absolutely nailed the butterfly sugar cookies. They were such a lovely treat! I ordered these rice krispie treats that were so perfect a few people thought they were soap, haha!
We use these wooden tables and chairs at each party. They’re amazing and I wholeheartedly recommend them. We keep them above the garage in our storage area and pull them down for parties and events. We have kept ours unfinished wood so that any staining lightly sands off.
Sometimes it’s the little details like a tiny piece of velvet ribbon tied to a plain paper straw and layering the perfect plates that make a huge impact. I found the small dessert floral plates on Zazzle and customized them a bit by adding a few more butterflies. The scalloped blush dinner plate is by Ma Fete and lovely. I used these acrylic rectangular vases to hold the flowers I arranged myself. I hot glued some moss on the outside for added whimsy.
I bought these off Etsy and they stole the show! This was a significant cost of the party as these are handmade from a small shop in Australia. I wanted the little girls to get to pick a pair of wings and run around wearing them, then take them home as their party favor. I picked up the sticks on a walk through the woods. Matt helped me assemble the little rack and tie the ribbon to hang the wings off of. Adorable.
Little girls love crafts! It’s a great activity to have on hand to keep them all busy. I don’t like to overly schedule the events of parties because part of the fun of having all your friends over is just playing. I bought a stack of these wooden butterflies from Target and then picked up some sparkly jewel stickers and these acrylic paint markers which ended up being such a hit. Aubrey now uses them exclusively to make her art. I wanted them to be able to “paint” without the mess of it / mom supervision required and these acrylic markers were wonderful. They all had so much fun and made some lovely butterflies.
It was such a joy to bring together friends, celebrate Aubrey turning a whole hand big and enjoy the lovely little things of life. Because life is hard and honestly without friends, this party would never have come together. Matt was still non-weight bearing following hip surgery. He’s normally the heavy lifter. We have community around us that stepped in and hauled kid’s tables down from the attic, helped bring up backdrops from the basement and moved around all our furniture to make this winter party happen. Little things but for me this reinforces why we even bother with parties–life is hard, wildly celebrate the lovely when you can. This is the heartbeat of life, the joy rather than just surviving and boy is it worth it every time. We loved throwing her this butterfly party. Don’t miss her Unicorn Party here or the sweetest Snowflake Party you ever did see.
