A 40th Surprise Birthday Party at Beacon Hill Books & Cafe

Never in my wildest dreams! Weren’t we just 20 years old on our first date at Pizza Nova in Point Loma, over a bowl of pesto spaghetti I was too embarrassed to eat, finding out all that basic info about each other? Matt upon hearing my birthdate and realizing I was a few months older, blurted out, “I’m going to throw you the biggest over the hill 40th birthday you’ve ever seen.” I’m pretty sure that would have sent some ladies running for the door but he was always my person. And true to his word, 20 years later, Matt outdid himself planning this surprise birthday party for me.

The loveliness abounded and it was at my favorite bookshop no less. If you haven’t been before, Beacon Hill Books & Cafe is a pretty delightful spot, to get to linger in nooks and take in all the details crowd-free was really special. To be surrounded by friends, family and words was exactly how I wanted to ring in a new decade–one that I hope is filled with the wisdom of the written word, the sweetness of friendship, steadfast love and flowers. Beacon Hill Books & Cafe is a lovely venue for special occasions, thank you for making my birthday dreams come true. And thank you Ruth Eileen Photography for surprising me with your presence and capturing all the special moments of this big day.

LET MY LIFE BE FILLED WITH LOVELY FLOWERS

There are not many things I love more than flowers and the talented hands at Beacon Hill Books & Cafe made the most beautiful arrangements in house. They even found me peonies months before they typically delight us with their presence! The bouquets were filled with all those delicate blooms in soft shades that make my heart sing. Paired with the plates and blue linens, well they were simply lovely echos of all my favorite things.

SWEET TREATS

I didn’t get to see the cake until everyone erupted in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” but it was so beautiful! Lizzie outdid herself on these beautiful buttercream flowers. I’m thankful for you Lizzie’s Bakery!

I even had my own sugar cookies!! Thank you Bethany (@flourdbybethany) for making these sweet treats for me! The subtle stripes and bows and blooms were almost too pretty to eat!

Dinner was delicious and Matt specially requested a German Riesling which was so so good. I love sweet wines! And for the guests, each went home with a favorite book of mine (The Frozen River) wrapped up special by Beacon Hill Books & Cafe. As we age, there are fewer opportunities to celebrate with those we love, especially for surprise birthdays. For a gal whose love language is time, I felt cherished by those who made the time and traveled near and far to be here. What a gift! Cheers to being 40 and all the lovely that lies ahead!
