When you think of all the unlovely things mommas deal with daily, is there any wonder we shower them with flowers and delicious food on their special day!? Flowers make all things more beautiful. And what is food without a knock-your-socks-off tablescape? So in honor of Mother’s Day, I had the opportunity to partner with Homesense in order to find all the makings of a beautiful table. Now Homesense is new to me, although part of the HomeGoods/TJX family makes it feel familiar, it is definitely a unique, exciting experience. It’s filled to the brim with high quality furniture, lighting, rugs and amazing decor items too, all at great prices. And what makes it so fun, it’s always a new selection of quality finds. There’s a bunch of new Homesense stores opening this year so check to see if you have any close to you!

So I set out with my two littles in tow, gearing them up for the treasure hunt by telling them they needed to put their “spyglass” eyes on. Even little ones, when you give them a mission, are more apt to enjoy themselves / cooperate and give momma 2 seconds of sanity. We headed to the entertaining section, although I have to admit being sidetracked by the pillows that are now happily gracing my porch. Haha!

STEP 1: FIND AN INSPIRATION PIECE

I wanted unique plates that literally stop you in your tracks. With both home decor and tablescapes, I always look for that inspiration piece that everything about the design hinges on. It took some hunting and getting down to look at the bottom racks to find them but I can confidently call these the most beautiful plates of all time. Because they are just that pretty. Here’s an insider tip: ALWAYS look at the very bottom racks. I feel like the good stuff hides out down there.

STEP 2: WALK AROUND WITH YOUR INSPIRATION PIECE TO FIND THE OTHER ITEMS FOR YOUR TABLE

Even though I was wrangling two little boys and sounding like a broken record repeating “look with your eyes don’t touch with your fingers,” I knew instantly these plates were the piece. I needed at least 6 and luckily there were quite a few so we snagged them up and headed to the linens on our hunt for the perfect tablescape makings. Now once you have your inspiration, all the pieces begin to fall in place. I used those plates to dictated what linens I came home with, from beautiful blue/grey chambray napkins to a gorgeous stripped table runner.

STEP 3: BRING IN NATURAL ELEMENTS

While I was looking through the napkins, my son grabbed a low hanging stack of round twine placemats. When I looked down I realized the brilliance of his move. They were absolutely perfect! A natural element grounds design, almost like it gives your eyes a place to “rest.” These twine placements were the perfect touch to ground the design of the tablescape. Leave it to a kiddo to help hit this tablescape out of the park. Sometimes what feels like a nuisance can really turn into quite an asset. Shopping with kids is no joke but their little eyes see things that ultimately bring more lovely to our world.

STEP 4: THINK FLORALS

Once you have your linens, plates, glasses, and placemats, the table kind of sets itself. I grabbed my boys (once again, stay at home mom problems) and braved a crazy rain storm to make it to the flower market. I brought my inspiration piece, ie most beautiful plate of all time, and one of the chambray napkins and headed down the aisles. I knew I wanted blush and lavender and was hoping to find some berries. Flower shopping is much easier when you have your inspiration piece with you. And granola bars. Because someone has got to feed the beasts, ahem, children, feed the children.

STEP 5: THINK OF UNIQUE WAYS TO USE THOSE FLORALS

From individual arrangements on each setting to just a small spray of flowers, these little touches go a long ways to pulling the whole table together. If you get creative, there’s an endless supply of unique vases to arrange flowers in. I used a compote from the Magnolia Home collection at Target. It’s nice and deep which hides the floral foam well. But think, individuals bowls or small cups could easily becomes mini vases. Raid your cupboard.

How beautiful is this tablescape? From those “stop you in your tracks” plates with their lavender, blue, plum tones to the chambray napkins and runner, so much lovely. Run. These beautiful pictures were taken by sweet Dari Pillsbury of Dari Michelle Photography. She pulled some amazing jedi moves to capture this tablescape as we were in the last stages of a major home renovation and pretty much all you could see was unlovely plastic wrap and chaos. But she found the lovely even through the chaos and did an amazing job. Even in the hard days and the chaos there is lovely there if you look for it.
