Cade turned eight a few weeks back and we celebrated on a rainy Saturday with almost his entire class and all the Legos you can possibly imagine. He’s a Lego-loving boy and always been my crafter, creator and imagination-extraordinaire. He’s also sweet. When mulling over party themes a couple months before I thought he had landed on a “skiing party” but something kept nudging me to ask again. I even sent my hubby up one evening after a quick cuddle-sesh made me think he may just be picking that because I seemed excited about it. Clearly as a parent you want to celebrate your kiddo with a party that they actually want. After a heart to heart and some more cuddling he said confidently, “I want a LEGO party.” And so it was.
The color palette was soft blues and teal with lots of white and wood. Very Jackie I know. I’m not fooling any of you at this point in our relationship. Really the only spot you’ll see that standard LEGO man yellow is on the cake which makes it pop beautifully.
Once we pick a theme, Etsy is my go-to for party planning help. The makers, creators and small shops create the best and most original party supplies. Give yourself at least a month because the vendors are often booked out and shipping is not easy these days, especially with so many shops abroad. So let’s stray on in, the LEGOS are loose!
Cade is 8 now. I know I say it every year but stop it time, stop growing these kids of mine. If you’ve been around for any length of time and seen previous parties, you’ll recognize the tables and chairs. We bought them for Kai’s 2nd birthday, a Brown Bear Party, alllllll those years ago and they’re still going strong! Cade is getting big for them but to span toddlerhood all the way up to 8 is pretty impressive. And they still make them, making them perfect for a long term investment for parties or playrooms. They’re solid wood, sturdy, and unfinished (which is key because any and all stains lightly sand out). They are also a lovely natural wood color and are budget-friendly, even when buying in bulk. I think we bought 4 sets and an extra set of chairs.
On the kid’s table I used a pretty fabric cut to size for the runners. I filled these acrylic boxes with coordinating LEGO pieces I picked up at our local LEGO store. Each place setting is set on a white LEGO baseplate and has a set of square plates (9″ blue and 7″ white). The adorable brick utensils come in a three colors per set, I used only the blue color (*you’ll need to buy more sets if you only intend to use one color). I asked an Etsy shop for a custom listing in just light blue for these cute small plastic Lego boxes. They’re filled with block candies. I loved working with PoppyJackShop to create these custom Lego-themed wood stir sticks (and the welcome sign!). All the little details really bring the theme together.
A few weeks back my custom desk arrived from Dunes and Duchess. She’s a beauty and will go in my garden office soon. When I took one look at that beautiful color I knew it needed to be the dessert table. Highlights of the table were a beautiful cake and chocolate LEGO pieces made by a friend. She also made Kai’s first birthday cake if you’ll remember his Under the Sea party from ages ago (you’ll even get glimpses of our home pre-renovation). The cookies were stunning and made by my sweet friend Eileen of Honey & Lou Baking Co. These are always the highlights of my kiddo’s birthday parties because they’re just so special and astoundingly beautiful art. M&Ms in open containers invited nibbling and the brick lollipops were also a hit.
Dessert tables are so unique to these special events and a joy to create. The kids adore them–it’s the thing of dreams and precious memories! I used a thin piece of plywood painted white (the backdrop from Cade’s Airplane Party) and hot glued on the wooden LEGO men that I had specially made. I asked the Etsy shop for just the backer to their LEGO display man and they were happy to help. Some of the honeycomb balls are from Kai’s Puppy Party two years ago. I ordered a few more from my favorite vendor and taped/tied them up to my picture light in a grouping above the table. I used Navy Blue, Pacific Blue, Dusty Blue, Parade Blue and Sky Blue in different sizes. A balloon-free party for those who are looking for more environmentally-friendly party ideas.
Now we didn’t just eat treats, although let’s be real, that’s everyone’s favorite part of a party. We had Chipotle cater so we could “build” our own burritos. A hit with kids and adults alike, they deliver it to your door so there’s no rushing out the morning of. Plus we get to eat left overs for two straight days.
I ordered these adorable 6 x 8″ canvas bags and had them printed with a LEGO man silhouette I made. They were the perfect size for all the favors. From crayon men to LEGO bracelets to bubbles, these favors were filled with sweet surprises for our little guests. The LEGO wooden picture frame holders are available here.
Husband was in charge of the games and he devised a timed LEGO build for the kids. They were told to build the biggest number 8 they could in a couple minutes and the winner took home a small LEGO set. The kids loved it and it was shocking how big they were able to get their numbers! We also had a bounce house blown up in our garage. We own this bounce house, also a good investment when you throw a minimum of three parties a year. If interested, we have this one. It was another invest in it upfront and save in the long run, bounce houses are expensive to rent.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this fun LEGO party for our sweet eight year old. Madison Rae Photography did a beautiful job with the photography.
