Aubrey’s Nursery Closet

How sweet is this closet!? Holy moly was it ever fun to design and organize. It took us a bit of time clearly with a newborn in tow. Because we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl, I held off working on the closet. Really the whole room for that matter. We started some construction work on the room the beginning of January, just a few weeks before she was born. I’ll go into that later with her nursery reveal. But I knew I wanted a wallpaper on the back wall of the closet and needed to know the gender to make the decision.

The wallpaper is definitely a luxury but we live in an old home from 1879 and the lead issues are real. Before we did anything to the closet, we made sure the shelves were where we wanted them to be, removed unnecessary shelf supports and unsightly old hooks from the inside and then my hubby painted a lead encapsulating paint over the the inside of the entire closet, shelves and all. This acts as a barrier to prevent us from coming in contact with potential lead dust. Wallpaper acts as another barrier. Plus it’s pretty. Haha! I went with a blush grasscloth from Phillip Jeffries.

We ended up removing the upper doors off the closet which are now two big open holes where I moved my big seagrass baskets from downstairs in our entry. These are substantial baskets and add so much warmth. We never used those upper cabinets because you need a ladder to access them so the baskets really are just decorative. They add so much warmth, I love them up there.

I ended up forgoing buying an actual dresser for her changing pad / diaper changing station and instead buying a beautiful sidebar cabinet I’d been eyeing for our entry way. Right now it’s in Aubrey’s nursery to act as a changing table and place to store the essentials but it will end up downstairs when she no longer needs it. It doesn’t have drawers and those are kinda vital with kiddo clothes. Sooo, I found a solid wood 3 drawer dresser from one of my favorite brands, International Concepts and my hubby built it into the closet and framed it out so it looks completely integrated. We changed out the hardware adding pretty knobs and painted the edges white.

Another thing we did was add a second clothing bar under a shelf on the left side of the cabinet. I know the clothes don’t stay little forever so this can easily be taken out to accommodate more full size clothing. Right now it adds an adorable spot for some additional baskets at an easy-to-grab height.

It doesn’t take much to make a closet feel completely organized and visually appealing. Use all the same hangers. I initially wanted gold bars but had a hard time finding them. We went with inexpensive wood ones from Home Depot and instead got the ivory/gold hangers from Amazon. They pull in that little bit of warmth from the gold tone and make it look seamless.

I was purposeful to hang the clothing from longest to shortest. It really changes the look of the closet and is actually proving to be easy to maintain, something I was initially skeptical of. The bottom rack has both 3-6 months and 6-12 months hanging so that the smallest sizes meet in the middle, separated by a organizer tab with the sizing and then get longer as they get closer to the walls. This is very visually appealing to the eye.

I hope you enjoyed a peek into Aubrey’s nursery as we get it all ready. This closet was probably the easiest yet and in my humble opinion, the cutest! But that’s probably because there’s little pink clothes hanging up. My friend Madison from Madison Rae Photography captured the finished project pictures. She’s wonderful so contact her if you need any pictures.
