Books for Kids on Racism + Physical Differences

Is your heart hurting? Mine is. My heart is mad too and can’t believe all this is still happening in our world. I hate injustice and upheaval. I want to yell at someone and frankly be quick to open my mouth on every platform possible. But I am not a news outlet. My opinion is just that, mine and I fear that posting a pretty quote on social media would satisfy only my conscience and not evoke meaningful change. Here I need to step back and be still for a bit which I’ve found to be a powerful stance in situations where I feel tremendous tension. You can read my stance on things being unfair here. Because where we go next matters. I am uneducated on topics of race although quite familiar on matters of physical difference with Cade having bilateral prosthetics and being a staring object no matter where we go. Being quiet here is doesn’t feel like me standing with injustice (which is frankly what a lot of people are screaming at me right now), rather it’s being quick to listen and slow to wrong action until I know what I need to do.We all have different roles in fighting injustice in our world.

We all have different strengths and areas where we can evoke meaningful change. Friends, I hate that something as stupid as skin color is still a measuring stick of worth. It literally pains my heart. So how do I walk forward and what do I do to try and be a difference maker? Are you asking yourself this as well? Literally all I can think of right now is my job is raising kids and I am a difference maker in their lives. You may be feeling the same way–perhaps frustrated, discouraged, maybe like a big fat failure. But here’s the thing, we have a tremendous gift to get to set the lens through which our littles come to see the world and the people in it. It is our responsibility to teach worth and to educate our babies well. In my little world the onus is on me and I intend to do my job. So here is a list of kid’s books on racism and physical differences that open dialogue and help set the lens by which they can see the true beauty difference adds to the world.
