40! On our very first date, at Pizza Nova in San Diego, Matt declared (upon finding out I was a few months older) that he was going to throw me the “biggest over the hill party ever” when I turned 40. It didn’t seem like a weird comment at the time, probably because he’s always been my person. Thanks hubs for keeping that because it was so much fun!
Where do you even start with the thank yous? I’m usually the thrower of parties so to be spoiled with a lovely surprise party at my favorite @beaconhillbooksandcafe with the prettiest table of all time, well it was nothing short of magical! My college roommate surprised me in my family room. My brother flew a baby across the country. Ruthie flew up from Florida. My dear friends found babysitters, dressed to the nines and made time for this lovely to happen! Thank you! @lizzies_bakery for a beautiful cake, Bethany @flourdbybethany for stunning cookies and the talented team at Beacon Hill Books and Cafe for making my surprise party a dream! What a gift you all are! I feel cherished. And thrilled to be 40!

Iguaçu Falls in Brazil & Argentina with a jaunt to Paraguay.
I will be in awe all my days on this earth we call home. The fruit, the mist from the falls, the Toucan who greeted us shortly after arrival will be seared into my memory until the day the Lord calls me home. Magic. Moments that don’t happen because it’s easy or inexpensive but there’s a whole lot I would sacrifice to continue these wanderings now 52 countries in.
We got stranded in airports, slept in hotel lobbies with 6 little kids until a room opened, paid for non-refundable flights we never got to take. Dealt with difficult people it took a whole lot of Grace to get over. Travel. Sometimes it all goes smoothly, sometimes you look at your husband and say “I think this trip might be the one that makes me turn in my passport.” And then you twirl into new countries with your dear friend, taste new foods and watch your children interact with culture, language differences and foods and you realize it’s all ok. The exhale and learning to pivot, recalibrate and find peace. Travel teaches oh so much.

Rio day 2. Our only sight seeing day in this beautiful city so we squeezed in as much as we possibly could with 6 little kids. It wouldn’t have happened without the amazing @foreveryoungrio showing us around. Thank you Allen for showing us your beautiful home, being patient with all our kiddos and getting us some delicious food. Everyone comes to Rio and wants to see the Christ the Redeemer statue (for good reason because it’s awesome) but my wishlist visit was the botanical garden. We started there in the peace of an urban jungle, saw our first Toucan, made our way up to the Christ the Redeemer statue, grabbed some acai and a delicious Brazilian lunch and headed to Sugarloaf near sunset. There’s so much more to see and at a perfect 90 degrees, low humidity and sunny, we’d come back in a heartbeat.
