Welcome Spring! How about a spotlight on a wonderful creator of lovely and a giveaway? Early last year I was planning a surprise party for my mom and I had this idea to use paper flowers in the decor of the party and on the party favors. So I started searching Etsy and Pinterest and finally Instagram. It was here that I found Christine Paper Design. Oh my goodness. Her Instagram feed @christinepaperdesign stopped me in my tracks and I was left speechless. How on earth were those beautiful flowers made of paper!?! I reached out to her and she was willing to work with me. I was her first US customer. What an honor! Needless to say that will not be the last time either. Her flowers are so stunning, the detail so intricate I can’t stop myself. I want to fill every corner of my home with them.
So since I think we should all know more about her, I set out to ask Christine about her business, her love for flowers and her incredible paper flower art. And here is what she said:
1) How did you get started making paper flowers?
Since I was a little girl I enjoyed nature and flowers, I loved to paint and draw, so I went to Art School and became a painter. After that, I majored in Fashion Design and spent most of my youth being a fashion designer for a major brand in my country. I discovered paper flowers six years ago, by accident in a picture online… I was fascinated about the idea and had the instant thought that I can do this… I had this feeling that I needed to do something else with my life.
I learned the techniques of making paper flowers by myself, I wanted to have my own style and became a paper artist! So, after a few years of learning and practice, I quit my job and began making paper flowers full time.
2) What is your favorite flower?
It’s hard for me to say what is my favorite flower because l love so many of them! At this moment I’m obsessed with magnolia… It’s such a delicate, soft and elegant flower!
3) How long does it take to make a typical bridal arrangement?
I spend most of the time in my studio… it’s a lot of hard work but always so fascinating! I usually make a bridal bouquet in four or five days of non-stop work, more than 12 hours a day!
4) Where are you and your studio located?
I live in a small mountain town from Romania.
5) Where do you find your inspiration for floral arrangements?
I find my inspiration in nature and real flowers. I have some flower books but pinterest and instagram help me a lot. There is also a very talented worldwide community of paper flower artists which I truly admire and keeps me motivated.
I always do my research on real flowers, I study lots of images with them, I make sketches and mood boards. I think of ways to reproduce the flowers and practice them.
I mix the paper flower techniques with my love for colors and painting. My goal is to make the flowers seem as real as possible … Also, because I’m not satisfied with the range of crepe paper coloring, I paint the paper so I can obtain the colour I want. I love mixing paint and discovering new shades all the time… the paper it’s like my canvas.
