Dried Fall Wreath

We got home from France on Monday night and it’s been a slow reentry. I had no problem getting on “French” time but sheesh man, I’ve been waking up at 3 am for the last three nights. The chilly New England days have meant a quick readjustment to autumn. Aubrey and I went pumpkin shopping yesterday and picked up some burgundy and plum tones to add to the garden. Which naturally translated into the creation of two dried fall wreaths for the garden house.

While we were hiking in the Redwoods in California a few weeks back, the kids and I collected some leaves and pinecones and brought them home. The look lovely tucked into this sweet fall wreath. You can certainly collect all the items you’ll need to make a similar fall wreath for your own home.

SUPPLIES

Grapevine Wreath Frame (I used this one here but needed to cut it down because it’s very large)

Burgundy Leaves (I used two bunches of these Burgundy Ivy and a bunch of the Burgundy Oak Leaves)

Yellow Maple Leaves

Alder Pinecones

Small Pinecones

Dried Star Flowers

Dried Palm Caps (These ones came on sticks, I cut the skewer off leaving about 1.5 inch to glue into the wreath)

Hot Glue Gun and Extra Glue Sticks

Grapevine Wire

Velvet Ribbon (I used this one layered with a smaller, lighter tan velvet ribbon, similar here)

INSTRUCTIONS

I really like the look of these simple grapevine wreaths but they’re massive at 24″ in diameter. I took a good 6-8″ out of the middle and rewired them back together so they’d actually fit on my doors. You can of course use a regular grapevine wreath from the craft store or twist some yourself.

I found that the leaves were a bit flattened from transit. You can open them a bit by running them quickly over a steamer or gingerly shape the leaves. Pretending the wreath is a clock, start at 6 and fill in bunches of leaves in a single direction up to 12, either up to the right or left. I did one of each so they’d look like a mirror image on my French doors. I used hot glue and the occasional grapevine wire to wire to keep the leaf stems into place.

With the leaves nicely in place, tuck in groupings of pinecones, small white star flower groupings and the occasional yellow maple leaf.

The velvet ribbon is the finishing touch and looks lovely with two sizes layered on eachother.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this lovely fall DIY. Once you have your wreath frame it’s really just gluing everything in place and hanging with some pretty brown ribbon. Don’t feel like making one, here’s my favorite pre-made option along with some others below:
