Things seem a bit odd right now in our world. To think of Easter basket goodies for the kiddos in the midst of pandemics seems frankly, insignificant. But if you’re like me you may need something else to think about, to keep your sanity and drive you forward. Easter means hope and restoration, triumph and lovely. And we’ll be celebrating it with abandon. Our little ones are shaded from much of the hysteria and worry. And for them that’s exactly how I want it to be. Easter baskets with little odds and ends feels normal and I’m embracing it. But I have thoughts for you, keep on reading dear friend.
We’ve been reading through the Little House on the Prairie series with them recently. We’re on book two and they are LOVING it. I’m loving it. It was a highlight of my childhood and now reading it as an adult is an absolute treat. It’s just as good, if not better, and it has me asking questions like, “what was Ma actually feeling in these moments?” As a little girl I resonated with the thoughts and feelings of Laura. As a momma, I resonate with the fortitude and strength of Ma. I wish she wrote some books so I could figure out how she appears to be a superwoman. I know I’ve gotten a bit off track, bear with me.
We just read the chapter on their first Christmas on the Prairie. Ma and Pa had nothing for the girls and their hearts were blue and Mr. Edwards swims a creek to get to them and bring them gifts. And it describes in vivid detail the awe the little girls felt for their gifts–a tin cup, peppermint stick, cookie made of fine white sugar and a penny. She remembered those gifts all her life and wrote them down with such passion that as a momma, it reminded me how the gifts we give and get truly affect us. And it doesn’t have to break the bank. I found these adorable gingham plates at Target and they’re $3.50 each. If all a basket has is a new plate and some jelly beans, little ones will still remember and be in awe of something you gave them.

More than anything, they see the heart behind our gifts and feel love. We’re in the midst of a uncertain time with uncertain finances and heaps of worries. Don’t let a gift guide filled with goodies make you feel less of a momma. If all you have for your littles on Easter is a hug and some jelly beans, use those jelly beans as a treasure hunt, hide them all over the house and then play with them as they search in abandon. It will probably end up being their favorite Easter yet and you will have spent only a few dollars, if that. Sweet momma, you are enough for you littles and exactly what they need. They don’t need a basket full of shiny new things, they need you.
