I love the look of the woven baskets and decided it was time to figure out how to turn some woven pots into a hanging version for our porch via this hanging baskets DIY. There are some really wonderful woven baskets available now days that are made of weather-friendly plastic that look so close to a natural fiber you can barely tell the difference. We used them in the outdoor mud kitchen last year. I found my woven pots at HomeGoods and would recommend looking there. Now is the season where they have an abundance of patio-inspired goods.
Because this material is a plastic, you can get away without a plastic liner and they hold the soil fine. However, because mine are meant to be outdoor planters, they came with a removable interior planter to put the soil in. We initially removed it to tie on the rope.
Really this was a figure out how to do this as cheaply as possible task. You can absolutely buy pre-made hanging planter chain but I opted to use rope I already had.
Starting on the inside we strung the rope through the woven material tying a knot on the inside of the basket. You can see the gaps in the weave where it is easy to push rope through. Do this three times evenly spaced around the edge of the basket. Matt got the ladder out and stood there slowly lowering the rope until I figured out how long I wanted them to hang down. He held his hand there and then wrapped the gathered rope with a piece of duct tape. He then tied those three ropes above the duct tape into a single knot. The duct tape was brilliant because it held the rope together evenly instead of relying on knot tying skills. You can see it in the picture below. Now if I was on my game, I would have wrapped the duct tape with a smaller thickness of twine to look better. Brilliant move husband.
We debated a bit because the left basket looks lopsided to me and even though we finagled with it, the husband is convinced it is the actual basket that is wonky. And after 10 minutes on the ladder he abandoned the tweaking. You win some you lose some. Now we wait for the plants to grow big and cascade down! I can barely wait!
Don’t be afraid to turn some of those outdoor woven pots you see into a hanging version for a porch or overhang with this hanging baskets DIY. They add such a lovely texture to the outdoors and look beautiful with the flowers tumbling down. If you have a covered porch, a plastic liner and you use a waterproofing clear spray you could definitely give natural woven baskets a try too. Happy springtime friends!
