June is my favorite time in the garden. The peonies, garden roses, poppies are all bursting to life. It’s glorious green everywhere you look. Clearly the plants matter a great deal but choosing the right accent pieces–patio furniture, planters, and trellises all play a role in how your yard feels. Neutrals and blues and some vintage finds continue through our yard the same way they do through our home. Read on for tips on how to pull together your for a coordinated look and relaxed feel.
I know it can seem silly because it’s the outside but when you think of the accents you need to buy, coordinate the colors. For us it’s blues and neutrals and copper accents. Once I picked the colors in our yard, I kept my eyes open for coordinating finds. Whether I was at Target or an antique show it helped narrow my scope so I wasn’t all over the place. Carrying colors throughout the yard brings a level of cohesion that feels really lovely.
Breath some life into some forgotten corners of your yard with a pretty trellis or vintage bird bath. I happened upon our vintage trellis pair at an antique show a few years ago. I walked past them a few times. They caught my eye each time but I wasn’t sure if they were too ornate. But that blue color. I couldn’t shake the feeling that they needed to come home with me and braced myself for the price. $75 for the pair. Shockingly inexpensive for a pair of lovely, aged, but sturdy metal trellises.
Your eye moves about a space and takes in the broader picture before honing in on details. Adding height adds interest. Be it plants like the allium or trellises like my pair, they are your friend in garden design because they broaden what your eye sees–plant climbing vines, find a trellis, add a window box, layer tall and short plants. Play with height in your yard.
These are the true workhorses of the yard and they aren’t usually very pretty but if you search you can find some really lovely options. Hoses, watering cans, even garden tools are becoming increasingly beautiful if you look for them. For example, we needed hose guides in our yard because I didn’t want to drag the hose across the plantings on either side of the stone walkway. I found these lovely hose guides on Etsy and can’t recommend them enough. They blend in seamlessly with the yard but also work so well. Other ideas include the pretty brass outdoor thermometer shown below or the copper fire pit that serves as a coffee table when the lid is on.

Everything is so lovely. What type of gravel did you use for the raised bed garden?
thank you!
Debbie Cooper
Hi Deb, we used a beige colored pea gravel. My only regret is under the pea gravel we put a weed block barrier, then regular large gravel. The kids like to drag their feet and scoop up the pea gravel which brings the ugly big grey gravel pieces to the surface. I wish I would have skipped that step and only gone with the pea gravel.
