I’m not quite sure why I never got around to getting our master bathroom reveal up on the blog. Ruth Eileen Photography took these images back in 2019. Having our master bathroom is a true gift.
In our previous home we had a tiny bath that was shared with the kid’s bedroom and when we moved into this old beauty, there was only one mostly working bathroom on the second story. When we planned our renovation in 2017, we expanded what was the “maid’s bedroom/bathroom” a small room (like 8′ x 8′ and bathroom at the top of the back stairs to the kitchen. This space became our master suite. We gained square footage by carrying the second story out fully over the kitchen footprint and by moving the staircase.
When designing this space, we added character by vaulting the ceiling but rather than millwork on the vault like the master bedroom, it’s plastered smooth. And so beautiful. In the center is a Ro Sham Beaux light fixture. The jute texture of it adds texture and warmth to the space.
The most eye catching feature of the space is the beautiful Tabarka tile floor in Touareg 7. I adore these floors and would put Tabarka tile in every room in my home if I could.
We matched the almond tone of the Tabarka ceramic floor tiles for the 2.5 x 8″ subway tile on the shower walls and around the half wall on the outside of the shower. This was also matched to the 2″ x 2″ hex shower floor tile. We used remnant calacutta marble for the floating seat and shower corner shelves and the frame of the shower.
The freestanding tub is the Memoirs Kohler 66″ freestanding soaking tub with center drain. I love this bathtub. It’s beautiful with it’s subtle rim and details. Some of the tubs out there just look ridiculous. But if I was picking a tub again, I’d get this same tub without the center drain. It has gotten annoying to shift in the tub and accidentally cause the water to drain.
THE DOUBLE VANITY
Our vanity is from Restoration Hardware, the maison double vanity in antique grey oak. We used a remnant slab of calacutta marble for the counters.
THE DETAILS
The mirror is from Potterybarn, it’s nice and large and fits the space well. We have the Bryant sconces in antiqued brass. The faucets are by TOTO. We needed to cut costs and go with a more inexpensive faucet and this has been a great choice. The vintage rug is from Etsy. The vintage wooden stool is from one of my favorite Etsy shops. It’s the perfect height for setting down a glass or book when you’re in the tub. Our tree is a Fern Podocarpus that if you’re local to the Boston area, I got at Russel’s in Wayland. It likes to be humid and wet so ours has thrived in the bathroom.
The flat roman shades are in a raw silk in the color grey by The Shade Store. We installed these a few months after the bathroom was done and realized during winter, we kinda need window treatments so as to not traumatize the neighbors. We splurged and went with motorized romans so that we wouldn’t have to crawl into the tub to close them. What a game changer and worth every penny for those tough to reach spots.
The large vase was the inspiration for the color of the roman shades and I found it at HomeGoods. The smaller vase is one of my all time favorites. They go together like a match made in heaven. I hope you’ve enjoyed this peak at our master bathroom.
