Speckled Wood Eggs Tutorial

Oh spring in all your grandeur. I have to admit I get fully carried away by all things spring. Bunnies, eggs, flowers, pinks…all of it. And especially now that we’re homebound, thank you Coronavirus. Spring is my favorite season with the freshness, the hope and all those beautiful tulips and blooming trees that remind me of grace and the renewal that can come to each of us. With this speckled wood egg tutorial, I’ll walk you through how I made those cute wood eggs for the centerpiece on our spring table a few posts back.

I love the natural look of these eggs. With just some acrylic paint for the craft store and a paint brush you can make these wooden eggs. I started with two different sizes of eggs. For the majority I kept them the natural wood color. But for a few lucky ones I painted them with a light robin’s egg blue or mossy green. Both colors I made from acrylic paint that I watered down.

Mix the blue and green colors to your liking using acrylic paints, muting brighter greens and blues with grey or white. Then use water to dilute down the color to a watery consistency.

Cover your surface with a towel you don’t mind getting paint on or paper towels, newspaper, etc. Gather your supplies–a dark brown acrylic paint, some water and a stiff paint brush. Dip the tip of the brush in the brown paint. Now using your thumb or index finger, flick the paint brush brittles so the paint splatters in little drops.

Try to move around the eggs and the paint brush for a more organic look to the speckles. Imperfection is key with this.

Such a sweet way to add some spring to your home and an easy craft to get the kids to help with. What little one doesn’t love splattering paint. If it’s nice out, definitely do this outside. Haha!
