Ordinary glazed sugar cookies are taken to the cuteness max with just a simple wafer paper heart. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or birthday party treats, you’re going to love presenting these cuties to your dear ones. Plus this sugar cookie recipe is vegan and allergy-friendly so perfect for school treats!
Wafer paper is a rice paper that is edible. It dissolves in water but is sturdy and used by cake and cookie artists to print designs, make flowers and generally make treats awesome. Because wafer paper is sensitive to liquid it can be really hard to color. You can find tutorials online on the best ways to do it but I bipassed all of these steps by buying some preprinted watercolor sheets off Etsy.
I hadn’t ever worked with wafer paper before Kai’s 3rd birthday space cake but it was fun and easy to use and a great way to make special occasion cookies and cakes lovely. I am nooooo expert like the queen of wafer paper cakes herself, Stevi Auble of Hey There, Cupcake but I can pull off some simple things using the stuff and these cookies totally count as simple.
I bought a large heart hole punch off Etsy. Wafer paper is easy to hole punch and getting enough hearts out of a sheet is a much easier task with one. I tried to gently crease the hearts to give them some dimension while sitting on the cookie. This is easier said than done because the wafer paper crumbles and cracks easily. I broke a few hearts before I realized how gentle I needed to be.
I used my vegan sugar cookie recipe from this post over Christmas. It was a huge hit with our boys, super delicious and perfect for school treats since it is free of the major allergens. Plus it makes a pretty base for this Valentine’s Day cookie.
Easy and lovely. The perfect Valentine’s Day treat and a little extra special with the wafer paper heart. Madison Rae Photography captured these pretty pictures. If you’re in need of a New England Photographer, oh my goodness send her a note. She’s wonderful.
These are beautiful and I’m going to order some water paper to try this with my kids. As a parent of a food allergic child my sincerest thanks too for making an allergen safe treat!
Oh Stephanie I’m so glad! It’s surprisingly easy stuff to work with and pretty! Let me know how it turns out!
