Woodlawn Ave Remodel Month 4

I can barely believe we’re in the fourth month of remodel here at Woodlawn Ave. All the big construction stuff has been done and we’re starting to round the corner into the land of finish work. This last month the windows got put in, the siding went on the outside including the siding detail work, the cement floor was poured in the basement during a series of warm February days in Boston. The rough electrical is in and the HVAC and venting has been completed. Which means the wall in our current master bedroom (which will become a guest room / kid’s room) was taken out and a temporary wall put in.

Because we were out of town for 3 weeks, my hubby was really the one to see it slowly change. For me when we got back it was pretty fun to check on the progress because everything I was seeing was new.

It’s been pretty comical around bedtime each night because there is a big open hole in the side of our current master. My husband nails up a blanket each night before we go to bed so that when the workers arrive in the morning they aren’t staring at us in bed. Well me in bed. My hubby is more motivated than me and works out early. If you look closely at the picture below you can see the blanket next to the two vents.

This last week of being home and being back in a construction zone has been hard for me. We arrived late Sunday night after a full travel day with two toddlers to a porch filled with boxes. Literally “can’t get in the front door” boxes piled up. I had been asked to order the lighting by the team which worked out because there were many President’s Day sales happening but they were delivered while hubby was in California picking us up and helping us get home. Why on earth they ALL decided to show up at once is beyond me. Pretty depressing to have boxes piled all over table, hallway, bedroom corners. That coupled with dust from the bedroom wall coming down had me pretty overwhelmed and feeling a bit blue.

No one ever said it was going to be easy living through this with toddlers. I was under no impression it would be a breeze and I feel like we’ve weathered it well. But coming back from sunny, clean and lovely California was already a shock to my system. The remodel was not high on my ‘I like you’ list at that moment. So I did a whole lot of soul searching because I was feeling ungrateful and frustrated and I hate that. I know that this is a blessing and people wait their whole lives for this so I really wanted to feel happy about all the dust and boxes. I’m getting there. It’s starting to get exciting again.

I think that brings you up to date on the current happenings at our construction site. I think the next month is going to be exciting as they get the insulation sprayed in and the drywall up. We’ve picked the paint colors (also another blog post coming soon!), finalized the grout choices for the tile and ordered almost every single light. We’re getting bids for exterior painting and rot repair on the preexisting house. And we did a hilarious poll on IG asking you all to weigh in on our paint choices. I wanted a white house with grey shutters and grey garage doors and my hubby wanted to keep it exactly the same color. It was insane how outnumbered I was. You all were VERY opinionated about it NOT changing and I love that. So I admit defeat. And for fear of a riot I’m sure it will be exactly the same color just no longer peeling. Haha! It’s coming together friends.

It’s really coming along! I went through just a kitchen renovation, no children and about lost my mind! You are doing great in my book. It’s wonderful when it’s all over with. I still get this “thank goodness it’s not us” when I pass a house under renovation Hang in there!

Thank you Susan! It’s definitely been a challenge. Not an HGTV reveal but nitty gritty everyday hard. Haha! Soon though. We’ve come so far already. Thank you for following along.

My husband and I are gearing up for a second story addition and he keeps saying “this isn’t going to be one of your HGTV show renovations”. Yikes! It is going to be soooo tough with two little ones but so worth it to have the house we’ve dreamed of for so long! Love seeing the progress you’re making!

Aww good luck Emily on your remodel. It is tough but I know that it will definitely be worth it in the end. Prepare yourself for some rough days. I’m so glad I wasn’t alone in team white. I think white houses are so pretty but for fear of riots, I think we’ll have to keep it dark. Someday I’m going to have a white house. Haha!

P.S. I was team white house and I am trying like heck to convince my husband (and budget) of the same at my house!

It’s going to be incredible when it’s finished so you have something great to look forward to. You must be so tired of all the mess and with two little ones I’m sure it’s exhausting. Hopefully it won’t be much longer. It’s such a lovely house! Can’t wait to see all the colors you picked and lighting.

Thank you Donna! I am definitely tired of the mess but so thankful for it all at the same time. It feels good to honor an old home! 🙂
